Mundaring to York
October 22, 2002
Five cars travel from Mundaring to York along the powerline track.

In our encore performance for this particular trip, we again managed to get five vehicles along. The plan was the same as last time - go from just outside Mundaring to about 20km outside of York by following the powerlines. This time, however, it was quite a bit drier with water only found in one big hole that is fed by a spring. But, we still made do. Unlike the previous trip, the weather was fantastic.

Here was our starting group. Our first challenge was a bit of a hill climb. The Suzuki, having the least ground clearance and wheel travel had a little bit of trouble, but once the right line was found it wasn't an issue. Alan, out the first time driving the Prado made it look easy. Next we came across the place where Stuart got seriously stuck last time. I wanted to try out the normal puddle again, but forgot Text:to make sure I was in 4WD. In 2WD, this is how far I got. Once I had my brain in gear (as well as the car) getting out was much easier. (Duh!) Shane also had a go, but because he thought about what he was doing first (and used 4WD) it wasn't a problem at all. Our next stop was at a mud hole we had played in last time. Not too much mud, but there was another group there who had attempted to get through one hole only to seriously damage their 80 Series LandCruiser by running into a vertical wall. Whoops.

Anyway - they said this other one wasn't too bad except for the steep dropoff so I decided to give it a go. Not too many problems, but a few scrapes on the way through. For some reason, everyone else declined the invitation. A nice lunch was in order, so that's exactly what we did. Some were more civilised than others... After lunch, another couple of hill climbs. The consensus was that the second half of the trip was more difficult than the first. Certainly there were some bigger rocks and steeper hills to find our way over. You may remember the large puddle Dennis drove through from our last trip. This time, the big puddle was completely dry. Looking at the hole it left behind gave us a good idea why our splash was so big before. Some were reluctant to drive through it and with good cause. Very steep entry and the walls are very close to the sides of the car.
