The road on the way up was quite good - especially the new section of Marmion Ave from Brighton to Yanchep but we took Old Yanchep Rd back down to Joondalup and it was kind of rough.
I had a slowly leaking front tyre the whole way which required a couple of stops to put some air in (it wasn't worth changing the tube on the road) and at one of the stops near Clarkson we had three other flats. Bah!
Other than that, it was a pretty uneventful day except for Mr Class A Moron who tried to wipe out the entire peloton on West Coast Highway (apologies to those who haven't seen 30 Rock - you should take a look). Let me set the scene.
We're riding as a group, in double file (which is totally legal, BTW) north along West Coast Highway at about 5:45AM just coming up to where you can turn left and double back to get to City Beach. Mr Camry is coming south on West Coast Highway and is turning right across our path. Now, we're doing about 45 km/h at this point so we're not going slow and we definitely were at the intersection before him or at the very least we were in a position he has to stop - there is no way he could turn right in front of us.
So Mr Idiot Driver slows down (all is good so far) but then as the front of the peloton goes past him he just decides he's going to keep driving - right through the 30-odd riders streaming past. We all have to slam on the brakes (which causes mucho chaos at the back of the group but thankfully no mishaps) and then Mr Doofus yells at us for being on the road. Yeah, like we nearly killed or maimed 30 people by doing something stupid and we're not the ones stopped across both lanes of West Coast Highway.
Now, I'm the first to admit there are some idiot bike riders out there. But there are some Class A Morons driving cars and they have anger mangement issues. Couple that with one or two tonnes of metal, glass and rubber and you have a death machine at the hands of someone who is unstable and unpredictable. Honestly, it will take 30 seconds out of their day to slow down, give way (especially in cases where they don't have right of way) and just go with the flow.
Anyway - enough of that. Just happy to be home safely.
