4WD trip to the Wilbinga dunes - 11 August, 2002

It had been a little while since our last large group outing so to make up for it, we had two on the same day. Skip led a trip up to the Moore River area to see what it was like in Winter for the morning. You can read all about it here. In the arvo, Froggy led another trip with some of Skip's group into the sand dunes near Wilbinga. I didn't drive my car, but went along with Jan, a friend who had a brand new Mazda Tribute. Our participants for the day (in no particular order) were: The meeting spot was the Ocean View Tavern for those of us not on the morning river trip.

The gathering.
From there, we drove up to Wilbinga, turned off the road and met up with the guys from the morning trip. Some of us aired down before the first hill, the rest before the next largish hill. While we were doing this a few off-road bikes went past - we saw them a little later in the dunes.

Airing down.

Our next major stop was a large play area in the dunes. The 60 Series 'cruisers and the Prado didn't seem to have any issues at all but the rest of us had fun trying to get up a large dune. As you can see from the photos, Pommy Pete was just wandering around between us with little or no fuss. Tyres were let down a little more for those having troubles. The Vitara rolled a tyre off the rim while attempting a turn after this with no damage but obviously needed to change the wheel before being mobile again.

People still climbing.

Jan some of the way up.

Go Vitara!

MacGyver halfway up.

Still going.

But not getting there.

The contenders still at the bottom.

Jan has another go.
In the end, everyone made it up and we had some afternoon tea. Afterwards, there was some confusion in Jan's car, resulting in her needing a little recovery (whoops!).

The lunch.

Mazda in trouble.

MacGyver to the rescue.
The idea was to head back towards Perth on the beach but we abandoned this plan after finding it just a little bit too soft...

Buried!

Still buried.

Tracks...
We headed back south via the tracks instead, stopped off at Flat Rock to have a look around. MacGyver headed south on the beach and helped someone else out of trouble. After he returned we drove back out to the highway to air up.

Airing up.
And that was about it. All up a nice drive for the afternoon. Thanks to Froggy for organising it - we all had a good time...
